The Port of Mahón: A natural treasure in Menorca

Discovering the Port of Mahón: History, Beauty and Mediterranean Charm

The Port of Mahon, located on the beautiful island of Menorca, is one of the most impressive natural harbors in the Mediterranean. With an extension of approximately 5.5 kilometers, it is considered one of the largest natural harbors in the world, which has made it a strategic and commercial enclave throughout history.

A Journey through History: A port desired by many over the years

The Port of Mahón has witnessed countless historical events. From the time of the Phoenicians and Romans to the British and French domination, this port has been a key point in the trade and defense of the Mediterranean. During the 18th century, under British rule, Mahon became a naval base of great importance, which left an architectural and cultural imprint on the city.

In the port itself, you can visit important defensive buildings such as Lhe fortress of Isabell II (known as La Mola), built in 1848 by order of Queen Isabella II to protect against another invasive attack. One of the most advanced fortifications of those times with tunnels and subway galleries that can still be visited today as the Mola has been opened to the public as a historical and tourist site.

We also find remains of another older defense building, the Castillo de Sant Felipe, built in the 16th century under the reign of Philip II. Castle of Sant Felipe built in the XVI century under the reign of Felipe II, later under British control between the XVII-XVIII centuries after its conquest.Later it passed under the control of the British between the XVII-XVIII century after its conquest.

Lhe Lazaretto Island y King’s Island, both with a rich history linked to public health and sanitary isolation.

The King’s Island, located in the center of the Port of Mahon, owes its name to the arrival of King Alfonso III of Aragon in 1287 during the conquest of Menorca from the Muslims. However, its history is enriched over the centuries, becoming a key place for health and military history of the island.

During the British occupation, the island became the location of a naval hospital. This hospital, built in 1711, was used by the British, French and Spanish over the years, and has now been restored by volunteers to preserve its heritage.

Today, the Isla del Rey is home to a cultural center and museum that showcase its fascinating history, allowing visitors to discover its importance in Menorca’s past.
